Security Companies UK
What to actually check before appointing a security provider — beyond the price on the quote.

Accreditation is the first filter, not the last.
There are thousands of security companies operating in the UK, and the gap between the best and the worst is enormous. The fastest way to narrow the field is accreditation: is the provider SIA approved, NSI Gold or NACOSS Gold accredited for monitoring, and certified to ISO 9001 for quality management? These aren't marketing badges — they mean the company is independently audited against a defined standard, year after year.

Check how guarding, CCTV and monitoring actually connect.
Many security companies specialise in one discipline — guarding, or CCTV installation, or alarm monitoring — and subcontract the rest. That's not necessarily wrong, but it does mean an incident might need to be handled across two or three organisations rather than one. Ask directly: if your camera detects an intrusion at 2am, who sees it, who decides what happens next, and how fast?

Vetting and management matter as much as licensing.
An SIA licence is the legal minimum for a security officer, not a guarantee of quality. Ask whether officers are BS 7858:2019 screened, who manages their performance and welfare day to day, and whether you'll have a named contract manager rather than a call centre. The answers tell you whether you're buying a service or just a body on site.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What accreditations should I look for in a UK security company?
SIA Approved Contractor status, NSI Gold or NACOSS Gold for monitoring, and ISO 9001 for quality management are the core indicators of an independently audited provider.
Is the cheapest quote usually the best value?
Rarely — the cheapest guarding or CCTV quotes are often built on minimum-wage staffing and minimal vetting, which shows up in service quality and staff turnover.
Should one company handle guarding, CCTV and monitoring?
It's not essential, but an integrated provider removes the coordination gap between systems and people during an actual incident.
